UK immigration has undergone a major facelift. as at November 2008, if you’re from Australia, New Zealand or South Africa and don’t have a UK visa yet, these changes will affect you. (you won’t need a working visa if you’re from the European Union or have a UK passport you, so you’re good to go.)

the changes include names for things – eg the Tier 1 replaces the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme or HSMP – and (major plus) the working holiday visa now allows for two full years of work in the UK (as opposed to the previous 12-month allowance) .

Tier 5 - Working Holiday Visa

tier 5, lovingly known as the working holiday visa, now known as the Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS). sounds scary! it’s not too bad if you’re from Oz or NZ as you are exempt from the 30 point certificate of sponsorship needed by all other applicants, from their home country. if you are however from SA, bad news kids. the UK government won’t let you apply for the new YMS. and that is simply because South Africa doesn’t have a similar working holiday scheme in place for Brits. SA is also unlikely to issue it’s peeps with the mandatory 30 point sponsorship certificate that is needed to apply for the YMS, so it's not looking good for SA citizens.

if you're not from SA though, you must have 50 points.

• 30 will be awarded for a certificate of sponsorship from your home country. It's likely Australians and New Zealanders will be exempt from this.
• 10 for being aged between 18 and 30
• 10 for having £1600 in the bank.

some other visa rules you should know.
• the visa lets you work and play in the UK for up to 24 months
• you can work for the entire 2 years of the visa in any job.
• you’re allowed to apply for a Tier 1 or Tier 2 visa as long as you go back home first, then apply.

Tier 2 - Work Permits for the UK

tier 2, used to be called the work permit UK. you can nab yourself one of these visas if you have a job offer from an employer in the UK. but you need points for this little guy too.

70 points is needed here and they can be made up of
•    qualifications
•    prospective wage
•    english-speaking ability
•    having £800 in the bank.

there are a few rules that the employer has to play by, but just know that the job you are going for should be legit, you’ll need a job that requires some skill. also be aware the government is cracking down on these kind of visas makeing sure the job is legit and the employer is playing by the rules.

UK Five-Year Ancestry Visa

The ancestry visa — which allows citizens from Commonwealth countries to work and settle in the UK if they have British-born grandparents— will be retained.

In February, the Home Office announced it would review whether the visa was still relevant and should be scrapped. But has since announced that it will stay.

An ancestry visa leaves you free to enter the UK and work without restrictions. It is usually valid for five years, and can be renewed as many times as you want.

Commonwealth citizens aged 17 or over who have a grandparent born in the UK (or the Republic of Ireland before March 31, 1922), are eligible to apply. You will also need to show evidence that you intend to work in the UK.

You can't apply for an ancestry visa from within the UK, although extensions can be granted through the Home Office
