rather than bang on about foreign currency exchange rates – which you can view here – we thought we’d share our chat with Jillian from Tranzfers instead.
Tranzfers are a foreign exchange provider, and they can help you get a decent deal on exchange rates when transferring money from bank account to bank account. Ie transfer money in the UK and transfer money to the UK.
so if for example you’re moving to London and have cash in your bank account in Australia that you want to take with you to London (without withdrawing the whole she-bang), Tranzfers can help you do that.
what they do
• help you choose your own exchange rate (so you can get the most out of your cashola!).
• they offer lower transfer fees than the big banks - a fee-free transaction with any amount of $10,000, and a $15 fee for anything under that amount.
• you can access Tranzfers 24hrs a day, 5 days a week (whenever the markets are open) – at their website (tranzfers.com) or by calling 1300 300 424 (in Australia), and 0845 686 1950 in the UK.
inside our foreign exchange clip
handy info if you plan to move cash between international bank accounts – i.e. from your Aus bank account to your London account (or the other way around).

HSBC has come up with its very own traveller friendly bank account, independent of Travelex,
it’s called the Passport Account.
the passport account is totally aimed at travellers and can be opened once you’ve landed in London or even before you go, online. if you do apply for the account online make sure you are landing in the UK within 3months of applying for the account otherwise it gets cancelled.
the account is a 12 month long account. it will cost you 6 quid a month to have and you will get a debit card to access your funds.
that’s it. basic account, basic access. after 12months HSBC will upgrade you to a better account that has better fees and better access.

“Opening a UK bank account is not as difficult as it use to be, that’s for sure. Once apon a time it use to be horror story after horror story but these days, the UK banks have gone ahead and decided to make it a little easier on expats.
Of course opening a bank account before you leave home is still the most popular option, it’s safe, it’s easy and its one less thing you have to do when you get to your new home –our Travelex/HSBC banking video gives you more details on that- but if you are all for the challenge of doing everything once you get there, or logistically your only option is to open an account once you’ve landed, all you need to do is make sure you land in London prepared. Most of the time it’s just a matter of taking the right forms of identification, making an appointment with a friendly banking staff member and choosing what account you want.
So we’ve done some investigating into the five major banks of England, to get you guys the lo-down on what each bank requires in the form of documents, types of accounts available to you and the process in which to open them. Be sure to check out the videos on each bank plus the nifty bank comparison table, get a full understanding of what each bank offers.
