Working in the UK Video Transcript

So I’ve decided to get you guys some hot tips on recruitment. CVs, what to bring over, what to expect, visas, you name it. I’ve tried to find out for you what the best thing to do is. Now I’ve got Kristen here from Blue Skies Recruitment and she’s my inside girl. She is going to tell us what you need to know to get you guys in front of recruiters as quick as we can.

Okay. Hello. Hello. Right so say they are in Australian and they are willing to work as soon as they can, what is the best thing? To get their CVs in front of you guys. To get over here even. The first thing you’ve probably already done or you’re thinking about is your visa. Now the first one you probably think about is the tourist working visa which is great. You’ll all pretty much get it. The only problem is it will give you two years but only one year working. So if you’re coming over to freelance, do some contract work, great you’ll be absolutely set. You can earn lots of money and do lots of traveling. A lot of people are coming over here to do a couple of years over here and get a bit of UK experience on their CV. In that case a working holiday visa is not so good.

What's on in London Video Transcript

Okay. So we’ve spoken about jobs, accommodations, banking, National Insurance numbers, all the necessary stuff but really you guys want to know where to party until the sun comes up right, well London has the perfect setting for everyone. So let’s say you want to listen to live music every single night of the week, well London is going to let you. Head to any pub in the north say Kanzan, Angels, Islington, you’re bound to stumble across a pub that’s got a singer in their band strumming away to a very happy crowd.

Or let’s say you want to dance like a jumping bean until five o’clock in the morning every Friday and Saturday night, London will let you because it’s got some of the best clubs in the world. It is known as the clubbing capital of Europe. Actually probably a close second to our  ??????, (1:15) which I might add is only a 2 ½ hour flight away from Heathrow, very convenient for all you clubbers.

Which UK Visa Video Transcript

Now before you even pack your bag or buy your ticket to get yourself to the UK there is something massive that you've got to do. You have to get yourself a visa. Now they won't let you work in London or England unless you have one. Now there are two main types of visa that Australians get and one is an ancestry visa. This is when your dad or granddad has UK blood and this allows you to work in the UK for 5 years in total. Now the majority of Australians get what's known as a 2 year holiday visa. This allows you to work for 12 months within the 2 year period that your visa is allocated to you.

Now to qualify for these 2 year holiday working visas it's really     quite simple. You have to be between 17 and 30 years of age, you have to be a commonwealth citizen and you have to be in Australia while applying for the Visa. Big one also, this visa is a holiday visa, so your working is incidental to your holiday making. It's not the main reason for you going over. They also want to know that you can look after yourself when your over in the UK and not bludgeon off their dollar so they will ask you for bank statements because they want to know you can support yourself and also get yourself back home. So just make sure you've got enough funds so that it looks quite reasonable when you send your application in.

London Transport Video Transcript

London transport. Okay guys to get around London you’ve got heaps of choice and it’s actually quite easy. London isn’t that big even though people think it is. You’ve got the underground. You’ve got London buses. Otherwise everyone walks when it’s not raining or freezing or cabbits.

Okay now the first thing you’re going to do is hit the London underground. Get off your plane at Heathrow. London underground is going to bring you into town so I’m going to go ahead and explain the tube map and just how easy it is to get around London.

Alright for the fundamentals of catching a tube. Obviously you need a destination. You need to know what color line you’re getting on to go to your destination. A few hot tips. London is divided into zones, which is going to apply to your ticketing. So one being the center and most expensive and zone six where you come from meaning Heathrow. So London is divided into north, south, east and west and your trains go northbound, southbound, eastbound, or westbound. Now this is what you need to know to catch your train in the right direction to the right destination. That’s why knowing your destination is definitely a helping point in where you’re catching the tube.

Okay there’s some tube etiquette that you need to know before you get on the tube. Fist of all, no one talks unless you’re Australian, South African or New Zealand. Make sure you let people get off before you get on otherwise you’ll get bowled over and if you can get a seat, very good thing.

TNT Magazine Video Transcript

When I first got here, I lived in a share house and one of my flat mates brought home the magazine and said Betsy this is TNT Magazine and it will help you sort everything out when you first come over here. So I initially used it to look for a job and stuff like that because that’s what I needed to do first and then plans on travel fell from there as well.

It’s free at every tube stop so you just grab it and plenty of info in there. It’s quite handy for jobs and mainly travel as well.

For me it’s a traveler’s bible for Australians and New Zealanders and South Africans being over here in London it’s full of ideas every week so lots of destinations within the UK
