Lloyds TSB UK Bank
Lloyds is another massive bank in London. these guys are really pro Australian and are happy to take an aussie passport to open one of their savings accounts. if you are from America or the EU or anywhere else, our advice would be to go on into a branch and make an appointment to see one of the really helpful banking staff.
We checked out the guys at Lloyds Hammersmith and they were super friendly and willing to open an account on the spot!

Hi there,
I'm a Kiwi and I tried Lloyds TSB Hammersmith, and they wouldn't open an account without an address - and they wouldn't accept a hotel address, so couldn't open an account straight away. You don't need a letter with your name on it and address, but you do need a non-hotel address.
Then I tried another branch, and they explained that without a job I couldn't get the classic account, rather I could only get the cash account, which they explained (they were very nice) is bad for your credit rating. So despite what the website says ( http://www.lloydstsb.com/current_accounts/new_to_the_uk.asp - "Normally all you need is a passport or ID card" - accessed March and April 2011) and this website, it isn't actually quite what it is made out to be.
Plus it would be useful if this website could say the exact account that got opened. Discovering that a cash account is bad for your credit rating is rather important, and to be avoided if possible - as this will effect many things to come.
I'm going to try Barclays tomorrow...
