Umbrella Companies: Myths & Facts
The most common myth surrounding umbrella companies is that we make umbrellas! We don't actually make umbrellas, but we do have you covered when it comes to making sure you maximise your pay whilst working in the UK.
Deciding on an umbrella company to get paid through when working in the UK can be very confusing, so I thought I would try and cover some of the most common misconceptions contractors have whilst using an Umbrella Company and the actual truth behind the myths!
First of all, what is an Umbrella Company?
In the United Kingdom, an umbrella company acts as an employer to independent contractors working under temporary contracts through a recruitment/employment agency.
Basically, your umbrella company issues invoices to your recruitment agency on your behalf (or client) and when payment of your invoice is made, will typically pay you through PAYE (similar to our PAYG system).
Is one umbrella company better than the other?
Well I'm a bit biased and would say that i4 is the best! But at the end of the day all Umbrella Companies use the same PAYE calculations to ascertain how much tax should be paid. The only difference between Umbrella Companies will be the fee that they charge and the level of service that they offer you. That's where i4 likes to set ourselves apart!

So why use an umbrella Company?
The benefit of using an umbrella company as opposed to getting paid directly by your recruitment agency is that it will allow you to offset a range of business expenses against your income before the tax is calculated, this means that you take home more at the end of your working week! You may also find that your recruitment agency will be you an increased hourly rate if you work (invoice) through an umbrella company, so you are a winner all round!
