Perseverance does in fact pay off
I am now an official guest writer at a leading UK prescription eyewear and designer sunglasses company. I have complete creative freedom (provided I can relate it to the company) and I will earn £7.50 per article published. It’s not a lot, but it’s a start and an in to the creative writing industry. Plus, I can write while still in Australia and searching for full-time work.
This all came about by me applying for every copywriting position I could find in South-East England. This is the first job I have heard back from (since employers have cleverly added a disclaimer to every advertisement, stating not to expect reply unless it is good news). Though it was a rejection, since the position had been filled, the company offered me the freelancing position, two days later I signed a contract and now I am off researching and writing stories about the eyewear industry.
It’s not what I dreamed of doing after I finished uni – but neither is unemployment. Out the of numerous jobs I’ve written up cover letters for and applied for on Reed.co.uk, this is the first to reply and I’m not about to turn it down.
So my message is simple – apply for everything and take whatever you can get. This freelancing gig may lead to something bigger and better down the track. I’ve recently realised that while I’m fresh out of uni and ready to work, so are thousands of English young professionals who are after the same jobs as me. As a foreigner, I have to make myself stand out from the crowd (on paper – my accent hardly helps me here) and prove that I have oodles of initiative and enthusiasm!
