Looking for work on the other side of the World

Writen by Katie Posted in Recruitment in London

It’s still a wee while before I jet off to London, but since I tend to be on the over-organised side (largely due to excitement) and I want to get the career-ball rolling, I’ve started searching for jobs in London while I pass the time.

I’m not expecting to arrive at Heathrow one week and stroll into my nice well-earned job the next, but I can at least try!

The sites I’ve been using are reed.co.uk, monster.com and seek.co.uk. I’ve been finding these sites quite helpful and am actually finding many jobs in London that I could totally do once I have my degree behind me, which is a relieving thought!

Last week when I was trolling through the long list of jobs in my field on Reed.co.uk, I came across not one, but two job advertisements that seemed to be written just for me. And just because I couldn’t shake the thought of them, I applied, four months before I even get over there!

Attached with my CV was a nicely written cover letter, introducing myself (and including the fact that I most definitely had the right to live and work in the UK) and explaining that I was arriving too late for this particular job, but would be ideally suited and very interested in a role in their company. Guess I’ll have to see what comes of it!

While I would like to think that I can get a career-job straight out of uni, if I have to print out hundreds of CVs and hand them out left right and centre to shops, cafes and bars… it really doesn’t worry me. I’ve been working in hospitality since I was 15 and I actually find it quite fun!

Which brings me to another thought… if you have the time, I would definitely recommend gaining some hospitality skills, such as barista training or bar work. I don’t have any official certificates, but put me behind a coffee machine and I can do the job easily! These kinds of skills will definitely help me pay the bills while I’m looking for a nice copywriting job J

Anyway, while I’ve made a start to the dreaded job-hunt, I will probably have to complete it when I’m actually ready to start! Until then, there’s certainly more than enough organising to keep me occupied until I fly away.

Katie xx
