Saving for many rainy days.

Writen by Katie Posted in Money - Banking and Tax

As I’m just about to get ready for another day of work at my post-exam, pre-graduation job in hospitality, I again have to remind myself that all these long days and nights spent serving others food and being lovely all the time, despite the disgusting humidity, will totally be worth it in the end. It’s all in the name of moving to London.

I’m completely in savings mode right now… I have four months to earn and save what I hope will be enough money until I can find employment in London. I’ve talked to a lot of people who have lived or are living in London and the popular theory so far is that the most wonderful city in the world is not cheap.

Which made me think… how much money is enough?

Purely because I like thinking in nice, neat figures, I’m aiming to leave Australia with $10,000. This is after I upgrade my Macbook, pay off my credit card and throw myself a lavish going away party.

I’m thinking $10,000 should be enough. As of today, this equates to about £6,400 (but the dollar just continues to go up and down, so only time will tell), which I’m confident will be enough to set myself up, pay a few weeks’ worth of rent plus deposit and explore the city. And possibly hit up the markets for some awesome vintage clothing ;)

I would love to hear from anyone else soon to move over… how much money do you consider enough to move over with? What is the minimum amount in your bank account you would confidently leave with?

Also, how are you storing your hard-earned savings? I was tossing up between buying pounds and storing my money on a cash passport, where once the money has been converted to the foreign currency, it is fixed, or putting a lump of money into a term deposit. I’ve opted for the latter, since I will earn some nice interest and I also didn’t want to risk the dollar getting any stronger after I had already bought my pounds. But it’s a risk either way, since the dollar could peak while my money is stuck in an untouchable account.

In any case, I suppose there’s no way of definitely knowing how much money I’m going to need. I’ll just have to work hard, save as much as I can and hope for the best.

Oh and in the meantime, hunt through your cupboards and sell your life away on eBay. Be ruthless!
