A job and then a house?

Which is it... it's a good question!

and the answer depends on so much...

When I first arrived in London I was staying in Gerard's Cross, miles away from London - but it was my only option - So I HAD to find a house before I could get a job, it was a matter of not out staying my welcome.

So I settled for Bayswater with some of my mates who were over there at the same time, it was central and it meant where ever I was working I could get to relatively easy. But I paid the price. Bayswater was not cheap..tube access and closeness to W1 costs money!

So after a while I moved to Fulham, cheaper, still accessible by Tube, but not as easy to get to my job.

But My job changed so much - I tempted when I was in London so I never new where I was going to be. After moving to Fulham though I did tell the recruiters that I would only work Central, South or South West - Not North or East, too far on the tube and in winter that sux!

London accommodation - Where NOT to stay.

and this is exactly why Nick and I look into every single company that wants to be a part of movign2london.com

I got a facebook message from one of our movers today and I was really upset to read it.

this mover had used a site that had been posted on our M2L facebook group hat we hadn't endorsed. the website was www.londonaccommodation.net

the guy that posted the link + photos of londonacommodation.net on our FB group hadn't introduced himself to Nick or me, hadn't asked if he could post to our users - he just did it.

now, before I even knew about this note from our mover, about how shocking her experience was, I emailed this guy to tell him I had taken down all his links, posts and pics because he hadn't asked us. ( apparently he now hates moving2london because of this..see below message..)

In the world of social networking and web 2.0, it's just not cool to post or comment or 'advertise' your business or service, on a site without asking first. I think it's just rude!

and so I took his stuff down and now I'm really I did.

this is the note I got from our mover today

London Suburbs Reviews Needed

I reckon we need more London Suburb reviews. Our Suburbs video is good, but it's all about our thoughts and views on particular suburbs. my mate saw my comments on Shebu ( Shepherds bush) and almost had a coronary. She LOVED living in Shepherds bush.

I loved living in Fulham and Bayswater. Bayswater casue it was so close to central London, literally just a walk through Hyde Park and I was at the top of Oxford Street. And Fulham because I felt part of a community. Heaps of aussies, some awesome local pubs ( be sure to check out the Pelican and the Sailsbury if you venture that far south ) and a cute village type feel, with some nice coffee shops, not to mention an M&S, a sSainsburys and a cinema.

So, if you've lived in a London suburb that you think is worthy of a review, good or bad - love to hear about it.

Heres some stuff we're dying  to know about your loved or loathed suburb. We will post it on our London suburbs pages. And your views will no doubt help out some other mover who is pondering the major decision of which part of London to live in.

London health system - staying healthy in london

So thought it was about time I addressed the London health system in a blog or two. We don't have much on the site about it - which will change soon so stay tuned, but until then here some helpful tips;

• The English health system is known as the NHS or the National Health Service. http://www.nhs.uk/Pages/HomePage.aspx

• It's a free service, not unlike Medicare in Australia.

• Once you have registered, you can go to any GP about any sickness you may have, cough, cold, broken leg, and not pay a penny.

• It's great for girls. Girls, you can visit the free sexual health clinics they have dotted around London

(http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Sexual-health clinics/Pages/Definition.aspx?url=Pages/what-is-it.aspx)

and get the pill for FREE! Months and months worth of it. You can also get an implonon inserted into your arm for nothing, and any other type of contraception you can think off -

• You'll have access to the hospitals, some dentists and ophthalmologists also.

London Recon- Our first London info night!

london recon

So, our first info night went ok. Not as many people as expected, but it was a good start.

Our partners seemed to be pretty happy, i4, Pulse, and Ozforex.

We also helped out some pretty curios people. Check this feedback from one of our attendees. Elika, she was awesome and I think we really helped her out.

I was so nervous all day but the partners were really happy to support us if we threw another night - so I think ill give it another go. I also think Ill direct people to our RSVP page on the website, that way I should have a better indication of who is actually going to turn up!

getting a job in London in this ‘economic climate’

london jobs image

we are getting loads of questions around jobs in London; are there any left, what's the economic climate like over there, how is it going to affect me when I move...All very very good questions.

in short, the economic climate in London is bad. when you get there, all you will hear about it doom and gloom. it's depressing!
but stuff the economic climate. you guys have to work out why you are going to London.

if it's for a career move, maybe now is not the best time, unless you have a kick-ass job to go over to.

getting sorted with a UK bank account

Our banking video will help you get an idea of what to do a. If you want to open an account before you leave b. What you can do to open a bank account when you first arrive in London.

a.       Open an account before you leave.

This is pretty easy. I used Travelex and HSBC. These guys are affiliated so you can open an account with HSBC (which is everywhere in London) and Travelex will transfer your money over into the UK account. I had to leave a deposit of 4grand in the HSBC bank account. Which was good for me – it meant I had money when I finally landed in London. Check out our HSBC and Travelex videos for more info.
