Jess Moves to London!

Posted in Before you Leave Home

I knew all about the London Eye, the West End, the fuzzy hat wearing guys who can't smile out the front of Buckingham Palace, the Thames, the dodgy weather... but I had no idea about getting a National Insurance Number, registering for a GP, no idea what an Oyster Card was, how to find a place to live, where was safe to live, how to find a job or how much living costs were going to set me back and how on earth do I change to the Wimbledon line from the Piccadilly line at Earls Court? Turns out there is quite a lot of stuff to worry about and to organise before you can completely immerse yourself into life as a fully functioning Londoner.

There are a lot of things I wished I'd known before I moved, rather than finding out the hard way. But that's the beauty of mistakes... you learn from them. And why should others have to make the same mistakes when they can learn from mine too? If you know what you're in for, moving to London can be drama free! (Can't change the weather though unfortunately)

So that's what I'm hoping this blog will do. Help future Londoners out with all the advise and tips that I can muster based on my own experiences and observations when I moved to London. I've been here for over a year now and now I'm all settled, I want to help others get settled. Try and make the transition as smooth as possible. When you're unorganised, London can be a cruel, cruel mistress, but when you're all sorted, it really is the one of the most amazing cities in the world to live in. I know I love it here.

Will start blogging regularly ASAP and if you guys want to send me questions I'll do my best to answer them for everyone.

Be talking to you all again soon.

Much love from London.

Jess

Hello! I plan to move as quickly as I can after I graduated, but I would love to first have fixed a job, a place to stay and have some things ready before I go - then if this may take a year or longer until I finally get set off , I am ready to take that chance!
But I was just wondering if I could have had any tips on how to find an apartment and a job before you get going on the moving-part? Example, what is a reasonable price for rent? General tip you know. Thank you in advance!
