I've booked my ticket. Now What?
So the time has come for me to start planning my “right of passage” as a young Aussie and make the big move to the greatest city of them all – London.
I’ve finished all of my end-of-semester exams, I’m working two jobs in hospitality, saving every cent I can and now I’m basically just waiting for the day I receive that official piece of paper that deems me as intelligent, because one week after that I will fly out of Brisbane International Airport, not to return for what I hope will be an awfully long time.
Although the next four months seem like a painfully long time to wait, I’ve suddenly realised the lengthy list of to-dos that I need to attack before I leave.
Who knew moving overseas was so, so much more complicated than simply booking a one-way ticket?
Quite fortunately for me, I am born to a Scottish mother and although she only spent the first three years of her life there, I am entitled to a UK passport, aka a visa-less form of entry.
So as naïve as I am, I thought it safe to assume that moving across the equator was a piece of cake.
But alas, as I have come to discover, the visa, while an essential element of the whole process, is merely the start.
I still need other essential things like a bank account, an NI number, a job (fairly important... I hear it’s pretty expensive over there!), somewhere to live would be nice… plus there’s all the little things, like an Oyster card, a SIM card, somewhere to stay when I first get there… and much, much more that I’m sure I will think of as I go along.
So here I present to you my blog, where I will keep you all thoroughly updated on the moving process. I’m sure there are many more people in my same situation, so this blog is about sharing my experiences but also about assuring you that you’re not the naivest of them all!
Happy planning!
