Where the bloody hell am I going to stay?

Writen by Katie Posted in Accommodation in London

Now three months away from my big move, it recently dawned on me that I have not yet found a place to call home in London. All three points of contact I had and was semi-relying on surprised everyone by moving back to Australia! So now the fun begins.

For a while now I’ve been regularly checking easyroommate for rooms to rent. There’s no shortage of websites like this that encourage you to sign up and create a profile to be matched with houses looking for new tenants – I just like the layout of easyroommate because it’s so easy to find what you’re looking for.

However, since I’m not naïve enough to send money away overseas as deposit on a room, I will end up finding a room once I’m over there. So when it gets closer to the time, my plan is to make contact with people offering rooms to rent and ask if we can organise to meet when I’m in London. And if all else fails, I’ll just totally wing it and see what I can find once I’m finally there.

In the meantime, I’ve booked a hostel for my first week, so when I get off the plane hungry, jetlagged and confused, I at least have a bed waiting for me.

There’s obviously a zillion hostels to stay at in London, some much cheaper than others. I chose St Christopher’s Camden, because I stayed at the St Christopher’s in Amsterdam once and was very impressed. Also, last time I was in London, Camden was my favourite place, so I’m going to treat myself to at least a week’s worth of living there.

To book the hostel, I used hostelworld.com, a site I have used a million times all over the world and would thoroughly recommend. Apart from allowing you to compare prices, location and availability of hostels, you can also see the ratings and reviews of people who’ve previously stayed there. Plus, you only have to pay a deposit when you book, so you can just the rest in cash on arrival (great for when making group bookings).

So that’s a week’s worth of accommodation covered… the rest, I suppose, I shall play by ear!
